About Alabama Brain Lab

Alabama BRAIN Lab is a group of engineers, scientists, physicians, clinicians, professors, executives, artists, students, patients, and caregivers focused on reducing the average 17-year gap between basic research and clinical practice by bridging resources across public and private entities to develop, test, and validate use-inspired innovations to improve Alabama’s Neurohealth.

Meet the Team

ABL Executive Leadership

  • Dr. Tyler's scientific and engineering efforts focus on developing products and solutions for noninvasive medical and consumer health devices, as well as neuromodulation solutions for national defense and security needs. These include methods and devices for cognitive and physical performance enhancement, as well as for treatment of mental health conditions. He is presently the co-founder of a small business working to develop and commercialize novel products to enhance brain health and cognition.

    Publications

  • Dr. McGregor is an Associate Professor and Director of Research in the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences and Director of Translational Research for the McKnight Brain Institute. His work currently investigates aging-related declines in motor control and its implications to stroke rehabilitation. His current projects employ multimodal imaging and neurophysiological techniques (TMS, rTMS, tDCS, fMRI and DTI) to investigate brain function. Dr. McGregor's work has shown that aging is associated with decreased levels of cortical inhibition, which affects motor control including motor learning. A major facet of this aging related phenomenon, however, is that individual differences in physical activity level appear to mitigate changes in cortical communication. Dr. McGregor's research has shown that lifestyle interventions can lessen or even reverse aging-related declines in behavioral performance in motor and cognitive domains. These findings have great relevance to rehabilitation programs which may be augmented by the incorporation of increased levels of physical activity.

    Keith graduated from the University of Florida with a PhD in Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience in 2010. He is interested in motor control, cognition, stroke rehabilitation, and aging.

ABL Directors

  • Dr. Evancho is our Director of Clinical Research. She received her doctorate in Physical Therapy from UAB and has worked as a PT at the Shepherd Center and as a Therapy Manager at a Senior Living Facility in Atlanta. Her research interests include neuroplastic enhancement for movement disorders, with a special interest in aging populations and neurodegenerative disease.

  • Dr. Reed is our Director of Communications and Engagement. After completing her Doctorate in Communications and Information Sciences, the former Emmy-winning Public TV producer/director (Discovering Alabama, Bookmark, Speaking Evolution) launched Honors College seminars that teach future scientists, engineers, and physicians how to communicate their work in accessible, compelling ways. Her stories and essays have appeared in mainstream and literary publications, and she has written or co-edited several books. In addition to promoting readable science, the recent Master’s in Public Health graduate is committed to promoting population neurohealth in Alabama.
